Worum geht's im Studium

Artificial Intelligence is widely adopted in our society: control mechanisms in airplanes, smart cameras and surveillance systems or robotics in industry. All these applications are based on AI methods to interpret information of different modalities and use it to enable intelligent and goal-directed behaviour.

At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you can study two different AI Master programmes: technical Artificial Intelligence in a joint programme with the UvA, and socially aware Artificial Intelligence.

Programme1: technival Artifical Intelligence in Amsterdam
This Master’s in Artificial Intelligence is a joint programme (from September 2015 onwards) of the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. It has a technical approach towards the field of AI and the collaboration makes it possible to offer a wide range of topics that are all taught by active researchers who are experts in each area.

To provide you with a full understanding of the spectrum of AI the programme starts with courses on core topics in Artificial Intelligence:
  • Multi-Agent Systems
  • Computational Intelligence
  • Computer Vision
  • Information Retrieval
  • Knowledge Representation
  • Machine Learning
  • Natural Language Processing

After the core topics you can select advanced courses in these areas or in more specific AI topics. The courses can be focused on one of the core topics above but it is also possible to explore combinations, for example specializing in Data Science by combining advanced Machine Learning with Visualization and High Performance Computing, or in Artificial Intelligence and the Web, by combining Information Retrieval, Knowledge Representation with web-based technology.

Programme 2: socially aware Artifical Intelligence
In this Master's programme, you can study AI technology from a societal perspective: how can we develop and evaluate computer-based technology that exploits knowledge about human functioning. There are two tracks: one focusing on how to interpret, support and adapt to human behaviour, another track focusing on understanding cognitive aspects of AI.

The two tracks Human Ambiance and Cognitive Science are oriented towards the practical application of AI technology in a broad, problem-oriented setting. You'll learn how to model both mental and physiological processes of human functioning. Such models are the basis of intelligent applications that support humans in their daily lives in a dedicated manner, also to enable that support systems to understand humans better.

Human Ambience
In this specialization, you will learn how human behaviour can be interpreted based on sensor data and computational models of physiological and cognitive processes. An example is the modeling of the mental and physical states associated with depression or the physical state of an athlete. You will also gain experience in integrating such knowledge within dedicated applications that support humans in their daily functioning, making these systems truly aware of human functioning.

In the specialization phase of the master you can study relevant courses with respect to an application area (e.g. support of people during exercising, or elderly care) or a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. psychology, sociology, movement sciences, biomedical sciences, criminology, etc.).

Cognitive Science
Immerse yourself in the multidisciplinary study of mind and cognition. Researchers in cognitive science come from a wide range of backgrounds, including psychology, computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, mathematics and neuroscience. They all share the common goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the human mind, for both theoretical and practical purposes.

Career prospects
At present, almost all AI graduates find a job relevant to their degree within a few months of leaving the university. They can find work in a range of professions, both managerial and technical. The kind of work you are likely to go into depends very much upon your chosen specialization. If you have taken Organizational Dynamics and Self-Organization, for example, then organizational consultancy could be for you. The Cognitive Science specialization might lead to a career in human factor design or applied human-computer interaction. An Intelligent Internet Applications specialization means that you will probably not have to wait long before being snapped up by business or the public sector.
