This specialization will offer you an inspiring and challenging study that is ideal for today’s digital world. The Econometrics and Data Science specialization is international oriented, fully taught in English, and will provide you with the necessary theoretical knowledge to succeed as an econometrician and data scientist for:

  • Companies providing services on the internet, such as Google, Amazon and
  • Banks, financial institutions and consultancies, such as ING, ABN Amro and Deloitte
  • Economic decision centers, Research institutes, Central Banks and Governments

The disciplines at the core of the Econometrics and Data Science specialization: mathematics, computer science, statistics, econometrics, machine learning, economics, finance and marketing. With this specialization you will also explore the strong connection between econometric and machine learning techniques. This is a unique and promising feature of the Econometrics and Data Science specialization.

This specialization will help you to develop an integrated perspective to Econometrics and Data Science. You will learn to think analytically and gain a balanced overview of diverse and interconnected issues on collecting, analyzing, modeling and forecasting data. You will also learn how to visualize data and how to present your findings, results and conclusions. The Econometrics and Operations Research: Econometrics and Data Science specialization is a technical and hands-on study that will prepare you for any future!

International Experts in Econometrics and Data Science are looking further

VU Amsterdam is an internationally oriented university campus and is engaged in world-class teaching and research. The Econometrics and Data Science specialization benefits highly from VU since the programme is truly multi-disciplinary. Courses in the diverse fields of mathematics, computer science, statistics, econometrics, finance, marketing, and ethics are delivered by the key specialists in their fields who are all residing on the VU Campus in Amsterdam, opposite to the financial district Zuidas. The Econometrics and Data Science specialization is a co-creation involving four major stakeholders: academics, employers, current students and alumni. This has resulted in a uniquely positioned Bachelor specialization that develops international leading Econometricians and Data Scientists who can make their first steps into research, professional and citizen organizations.

The programme in a nutshell

This programme reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Econometrics and Data Science: working with data requires the mastery of many skills and concepts, including those traditionally associated with the fields of statistics, computer science, economics, finance, ethics and others. The Econometrics and Data Science bachelor blends much of the pedagogical content from these disciplines but it is not the simple intersection. The integration of courses, with a balanced focus on theory and application, is a fundamental feature of an effective Econometrics and Data Science specialization programme and results in a synergistic approach to problem solving.

In a nutshell, the key competencies for the specialization Econometrics and Operations Research: Econometrics and Data Science are

  • Mathematical foundations
  • Computational and statistical thinking
  • Econometric model building and assessment
  • Algorithms and software foundation
  • Data Curation
  • Knowledge transference, communication and responsibility

In the first year of the Econometrics and Operations Research: Econometrics and Data Science specialization, the focus is on providing you with more mathematical skills (Analysis and Linear Algebra), key programming skills (Introduction to Programming with C or Java), and the foundations in statistics (probability and mathematical statistics). There are also offered introductory courses in data science, economics, finance and ethics. The second year is truly focussed on Econometrics and Data Science with introductory and intermediate courses in numerical methods, econometrics, data science (data structures, information retrieval, databases), statistics (computational statistics, multivariate statistics) and ethics. Throughout the first two years of the Bachelor, several data science cases (practical and hands-on) need to be carried out by groups of students. During the first semester of the third year you will follow a Minor programme. The second semester in the third year offers three in-depth courses (dynamic econometrics, machine learning and financial econometrics) and is completed with a Econometrics and Data Science Project Thesis that is developed in cooperation with a group of data science companies and includes a lecture series and personal support from well-known data companies.

Future prospects

After this bachelor specialization you will become a specialist in econometrics and data analysis who is valued highly by companies such as Google, Amazon and, but also financial institutions, consultancy firms, e-commerce organizations, start-ups exploring the latest developments in data science including App-Annie, PPC (pay-per-click) etc. Many graduates continue with a Master’s programme in Econometrics for which various other specializations exist.
