Worum geht's im Studium

The BA in Linguistics develops your knowledge on one of the most intriguing aspects of human knowledge and behaviour: language. Studying linguistics means learning about the fundamentals of human language, from its many sounds and sentence structures to the ways in which language influences how we think about the world. At Leiden University, it also means exciting and interactive lectures, an expansive curriculum that covers every corner of the globe and the most intriguing topics, and the flexibility to define your own educational experience. With the freedom to follow your own interests and exceptional support from our lecturers, the BA in Linguistics will give you the edge to succeed in any career you choose.

Is this the right programme for you?

  •  Are you fascinated by language in general, such as what makes a speech convincing, the process via which children acquire languages, and the history and diversity of languages in the world?
  • Are you interested in exploring the areas in which Linguistics intercepts with knowledge from psychology, neuroscience and computer science?
  • Do you like taking a logical approach to problem-solving?

Then you should consider applying to the BA in Linguistics at Leiden University.

Study programme

The first year of the programme focuses different aspects of linguistics. In courses such as Phonology, Historical Linguistics and Sociolinguistics, you will learn about the various research methods used in linguistics. Courses include lectures, seminars and tutorials. During the second semester, you will select and follow two courses that relate to your chosen specialisation.

During your second year you will take courses related to your chosen area of specialisation. Four specialised tracks are available: Descriptive Linguistics, Language and Cognition, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics (all taught in English) or Taal en Communicatie (taught in Dutch). You may also take courses from other specialisations. You will improve your research and general academic skills (such as analysis, writing and presenting).

Half of your third year is discretionary space: you can choose to do an internship, follow a fixed minor programme, or creating and following a personalised ‘study package’ comprising electives from another programme. This is an opportunity for you to further tailor your degree to suit your goals. During the final semester of the programme you write your academic thesis. You can choose the subject of your thesis together with your supervisor.
