Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges

Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) is the international Honours College of Leiden University, offering an innovative and cutting edge Liberal Arts & Sciences programme to highly talented and motivated students from all over the world. It offers a broad, flexible and interdisciplinary residential Bachelor's programme with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. This is a selective programme with an incoming class of 200 each year.

We want to enable students to respond critically and creatively to the flow of a rapidly changing world and we aim to enable them to look at issues from creative and novel perspectives. Our clearly defined international profile creates an intercultural experience that proudly culminates in our community of global citizens. No less than around 40 different nationalities are represented in both student body and staff.

Linking your studies to the Global Challenges of the 21st century, you will specialize in relevant fields like world politics, economics, governance, international justice, human & cultural interaction, global public health and environmental sciences. The goal of LUC is encapsulated by its motto: 'Building Knowledge for a Better World,' which is what our students and alumni aim to do!

Studying at Leiden University

LUC The Hague allows students the flexibility of creating their own curriculum based on their major. Whether your interests are in questions of international justice, world politics, diversity and integration, health and the environment, climate change and alternative energy strategies, or decision-making processes and human security.

LUC The Hague is a joint initiative of Universiteit Leiden and the City of The Hague. It combines Leiden's long academic tradition with the contemporary relevance of the International city of Peace and Justice:

  • A unique, student-centred and intensive academic and residential programme, being ranked as one of the top University Colleges in The Netherlands
  • Small-scale classes with research-active staff
  • A focus on Global Challenges: Peace and Justice, Sustainability, Diversity and Prosperity

Study programme

In your first year, you receive rigorous academic training (Academic Writing, History of Philosophy, History of Science, Mathematics and Statistics) as well as an introduction to the four core Global Challenges of the programme: Peace & Justice, Sustainability, Prosperity, and Diversity. The content of these global challenges courses also form an introduction to the major or study specialization of your second and third year.

LUC The Hague offers a broad, flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum, focused on enabling each student to design their own programme of study in accordance with their own personal interests and ambitions. Within this menu of choices there are a number of concentrations that we identify as 'Majors':

  • Human Diversity
  • International Justice
  • World Politics
  • Earth, Energy and Sustainability
  • Global Public Health
  • Governance, Economics and Development

In your third year you finish the programme with a research or capstone thesis project.

The general education programme is called 'Global Challenges' (25 EC) and is aimed at educating students to contribute to solutions for these challenges in a positive way. All students are therefore required to take four general education courses which contribute to their broad perspective on dealing with these challenges as well as introducing them to several fields of study.
