The International Federation of Social Work formulated the mission for the profession as follows: Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work”.

Theory and practice are closely linked at HAN. Your lecturers guide you through all the current research on international social work. At the same time, you dive straight into practice during your internships. Allowing you to apply the methodologies you learn in a real work setting.
In your 1st year you get a broad view of the field of international social work. At the same time you develop important professional skills. Like writing and presenting, but also creative skills. After successfully completing your 1st introductory year, you will start following more specialized subjects in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of your program.
Each year you do a work placement (internship). From your 2nd year you may even do your internship abroad. You work together with local communities on solving issues. A great opportunity to put your skills into practice and to make a difference in the lives of real people!
According to the Secretary-General of the International Federation of Social Work, Dr. Rory Truel, the profession of Social Work is “the fastest growing profession in the world cause more and more governments realize they need social work to build good societies. International solidarity and joint action is what makes the social work profession visible and strong”.

The Bachelor International Social Work is located in Nijmegen or Novio Magus as it was known in Roman times. It is the oldest town in the Netherlands . It has approximately 170,000 inhabitants of which 10% students. It is one of the best student cities of the Netherlands! The city is surrounded by woodlands, castles and polders. Nijmegen is close to the German border and has excellent rail and road connections to all over the Netherlands and Europe.
