Criminal Justice is a one-year Master’s at the renowned Leiden Law School at Leiden University. The programme focuses on criminology, criminal law and their mutual relationship. It is unique in its cross-national and multidisciplinary scope.

Crime and crime prevention
As a student in this programme , you will thoroughly study the concept of criminal justice: the system of principles, rules, practices and institutions through which the state administers sanctions against socially undesirable behaviour. The programme addresses key institutions, processes and cross-national issues on crime and crime prevention, law and policy. The Criminal Justice Master’s distinguishes itself by its international comparative perspective, analysing criminal justice systems, legislation and policies in common law and civil law countries.

Lectures and fieldtrips
Our programme is taught by academic staff as well as by professionals working in the criminal justice sector. Apart from following lectures, you will also participate in fieldtrips to Dutch and international institutions such as the Netherlands’ Council of State, Europol and the European Parliament.

Teaching methods at Leiden University
Studying at Leiden University can be quite different from what foreign students are used to. Take student ambassador Daniel, for example. He is a Romanian student and is currently in his third year of the bachelor’s in Dutch Studies. He explains: ‘Whereas in other countries lectures tend to only be about taking notes, here you’re encouraged to participate.’

In this video the international student ambassadors from China, Turkey, Germany and India explain the different teaching methods and show you how studying at Leiden university is different from studying in other countries.

Career opportunities:
The Criminal Justice master’s programme offered by the Leiden Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology is the gateway to an exciting national or international career. The programme is optimally designed to suit requirements for professional positions.

Career options

Career options include such positions as:

• policy maker for the police, the public prosecution office, the court system or the penitentiary system;
• consultant for NGOs or victim support agencies;
• academic researcher.
• Depending on each student’s individual academic training, additional post-academic study may be needed to complete the licence which is required to practise law as a lawyer, judge or public prosecutor.

Career guidance
Leiden Law School offers career activities to all its Advanced Studies students in the form of international CV writing workshops and seminars on establishing global careers. This faculty-level career assistance is supported by the student career service of Leiden University, which offers a wide range of services including communication training, CV checks and workshops on job application techniques.
