Programme in brief
In times of increasing global competition many companies operate globally or consider doing business internationally. But how do you decide on which markets to operate? How do you finance such undertakings? How do you hire the right internationally qualified employees? How do you make your product or service stand out from the crowd? These are some of the issues that managers at international companies face and for which you will be prepared during International Business.
As a future student of International Business you should be open to challenges and have a critical mind. Both being able to work independently and willing to work in multicultural teams are preconditions for a successful study career. Here, an affinity to foreign languages with a special focus on English is desirable. What is more, as a future International Business student you should be particularly interested in different cultures and have a special desire to explore all facets of an organization. Most will therefore be striving for a career in internationally-oriented companies.
What can you expect from us
We will provide you with all necessary knowledge, skills and attitude enabling you to operate in an international company. Content of the programme
International Business is a broad business study programme which aims at preparing you for a management position within an international business environment. International Business at Fontys Venlo distinguishes itself from similar study programmes by using project-based learning. In contrast to traditional paper-based and teacher-centric education, project-based learning is a dynamic student-centred approach. Students work together on projects tackling authentic business situations in which classic business economics subjects such as marketing & sales, finance & accounting, business organisaton, human resources and business research can be learned through cross-disciplinary application.
International Business distinguishes itself from similar study programmes through the incorporation of principles of project-based learning in the curriculum which is shown in the following illustration:
Our study programme is made up of knowledge modules such as marketing & sales, which are delivered in regular lectures, skill modules such as effective communication in English which are delivered in seminars and one major project module per semester which trains cross-disciplinary application of principles of business economics. The complexity of the semester project increases from study year to study year. Emphasis is placed on learning by doing and active training of 21st century skill such as critical thinking, digital citizenship and creativity.
As an integral part of studies, students complete two six-month internships; one each in semester 5 and semester 8. During the internship in semester 8 students complete their bachelor thesis as a business research project for the company in question. The student selects both the company and the county for both internships, which allows them significant flexibility in gaining insight and experience of a real international business environment. The minor abroad in semester 6 gives students the possibility to visit one of 125 partner universities worldwide, which opens up the possibility of further international experience.
In the third and the fourth study year you will do an internship. You can choose the company yourself, but we also provide a list of companies we work with. Internships can be done in the Netherlands or abroad. The choice is up to you.
In both internships you will solve a problem within the company. You experience what it’s like to work at a bachelor-level position. In the meantime you build your professional network. Not rarely an internship leads to a job. During both internships you will be supported by a lecturer. You will finish your study at Fontys with a bachelor thesis.
There are numerous internship companies where our students have worked: Philips, Vodafone, BMW, Tesla, KPN, Océ-Canon, T-Mobile and many others. Many students have conducted their internships at small and medium-sized companies.
The IBMS study programme offers excellent opportunities in internationally operating companies. These can either be multinationals or international companies in your own country.
The programme has a broad scope, which offers you a wide range of professional perspectives. You can think of positions in the field of:
business and management
employee in an international marketing or export department
international project manager
management assistant within a multinational company
As a graduate, you have two possibilities to commence your master studies. WIth a total of 240 ECTS credits, you have created the ideal starting point for an entry into graduate studies. The post-baccelaureate master studies do not require additional work experience and can be started immediately after your bachelor studies. A post-experience master requires additional work experience after the bachelor studies.
