Environmental Sciences-Uni
 Unique specializations
The Radboud University Nijmegen Master’s programme in Environmental Sciences takes an integrated multidisciplinary approach. Biologists, ecologists, environmental specialists and members of the medical profession work together on environmental issues at the Institute of Water and Wetland Research. Nijmegen scientists have an international reputation for their work on poisonous materials, pollution, ecology, nature management and water management. This expertise is reflected in our unique Master’s specializations: Human and Environmental Risk Assessment, Nature & Water Management, and Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management (TWM).
The best education
For the third time in succession an external commission of experts had judged our Environmental Sciences programme to be the best in the Netherlands. The Commission found the programme challenging and complimented us on our excellent facilities. We’ve adopted the small-scale approach to education – each year there are now about 25 new Master’s students – to ensure that each student receives personal supervision. In combination with a wide differentiated choice of topics within the programme, this has made the programme very attractive for those seeking quality and a study that fits their specific interests.
Truly international
Nature and the environment are not troubled by borders. This is also true of Nijmegen scientists. They have extensive international networks and participate in EU INTERREG (inter-regional) research projects. We have cooperated for many years with universities in Cardiff, Cambridge, Lublin, Zürich and Indonesia. This international orientation is also a feature of our Master’s programme. Not only do 50% of our students come from abroad, but there are also many opportunities for them to organise one of the two research internships elsewhere in the world. Within the track Transnational Ecosystem-based Water Management (TWM) – a joint degree programme with the Universities of Duisberg and Essen – students follow courses in Germany for six months.
The programme
The programme, which takes two years, is structured as follows: |
Mandatory science courses, such as Environmental Sciences, Environment and Ecological Modelling, Orientation in Environmental Research and Management (27 EC)
| |
Optional courses (9 EC)
| |
Philosophy (3 EC)
| |
Two research internships (60 EC)
| |
Elective courses or an extended internship (21 EC) |
Because of the involvement with the Germany universities, the structure of TWM is slightly different: |
Mandatory science courses (57 EC, including 30 EC in Duisberg-Essen)
| |
Optional courses
| |
Philosophy (3 EC)
| |
Project (16 EC)
| |
Master’s thesis (30 EC)
| |
Elective courses (6 EC) |
Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.
Career prospects
There is a strong market for environmental specialists. Thirty-eight percent of our graduates work in advisory bureaus, 26% in universities and research institutes, 13% in the private sector, 16% for national and regional government agencies and 8% for water boards.
Admission requirements |
The equivalent of a Dutch natural science Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Environmental Sciences (as evaluated by the examination committee)
| |
For those with knowledge gaps there is a modular programme in English (30 EC) which allows them to go more deeply into systems ecology, microbiology and molecular population biology (after which they are evaluated by the examination commission)
| |
Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of at least 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native speakers of English |
Application
This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.
