 Master’s programme in Social Psychology
Become the best researcher you can be
The Master’s programme in Social Psychology at VU University Amsterdam takes a multidisciplinary approach to fundamental social psychological processes. The underlying idea is that new insights can be obtained by incorporating biological, cognitive and evolutionary perspectives in the study of social psychological phenomena. These might include interpersonal relations, communication, cooperative behaviour and emotions. Social psychology is therefore an important factor in countless situations and settings.
During the programme you will learn the essential skills you need to conduct innovative research of the highest quality. In addition, the programme offers you an excellent opportunity for in-depth exploration of the central theories of social psychology and its adjacent disciplines. The teaching programme offers a specialization in social psychology which will enable you to bridge the gap between social psychology and related areas. Throughout the programme, there is a substantial focus on research and presentation skills.

Your programme in a nutshell
The Master’s in Social Psychology is a two-year programme taught in English. It consists primarily of small-scale teaching in seminars, tutorials and workshops, and involves: |
studying basic principles of social psychology
| |
acquiring advanced research skills
| |
exploring interdisciplinary perspectives
| |
conducting your own empirical research
| |
writing a Master’s thesis |
The teaching programme offers in-depth knowledge of the key areas within social psychology, with an emphasis on the general principles that underlie social behaviour.
First year
In the first year, knowledge is developed through courses devoted to the basic principles of social psychology (such as Interpersonal Processes, Feelings and Emotions) and through advanced courses which build on these basic principles (such as Motivation Science, Interdependence and Social Interaction). At the same time there is a strong emphasis on acquiring advanced research skills in such subjects as Methods and Statistics, Advanced Data Analysis, Writing and Presenting, Programming in Authorware and a Research Project.
Second year
The second year centres around two complementary objectives. The first of these is integrating the theoretical knowledge acquired in the first year. This involves exploring a range of interdisciplinary perspectives. The second is placing the basic first-year knowledge in a wider context that stretches beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines. These objectives are reflected in such courses as Bridging Social Psychology, Social Cognitive Neuroscience and a range of expert workshops given by leading international researchers.
