Theology-Uni

Unique in the world
Christians can be found all over the world. Around 75% live in the Southern hemisphere and 40% of migrants to Western Europe are Christians. What does this globalization mean for the Christian religion and people’s experience of Christianity? This is the central theme of this unique Master’s programme. Instead of studying theology in the classical way, you will study the Christian tradition from a comparative intercultural perspective. Each subject in the programme – whether it is spirituality or ethics – is taught with the same intercultural approach. After all, a global religion should adopt a global perspective.

Truly international
Intercultural Theology has always been a truly international Master’s programme, whereas the study was originally intended for theology students from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Since 2005, this programme has been open to all students. Three quarters of our graduates still come from abroad and our staff are also international. The Nijmegen School of Theology had contacts throughout the world. It has cooperative agreements with universities in Kenya, Tanzania, India and Indonesia which include agreements about PhD places in Nijmegen. The Nijmegen College has been established especially for foreign students. This is a religious community where students from different countries live and work together.

Personal tutor
The programme is closely linked to the research carried out by the Research Institute for Religious Studies and Theology. A panel of external experts recently evaluated our programme as “extremely good”. In addition, 88% of our students graduate – an extremely high percentage. This is because we know how to motivate our students with excellent education and intensive supervision. As a Master’s student you will have a personal tutor and you will work in an inspiring environment with excellent researchers. Nijmegen theologians are internationally recognized as being critical and socially involved thinkers.

The programme
The programme, which takes two years, is structured as follows:

Intercultural theology (20 EC)
Intercultural philosophy (10 EC)
Old Testament and New Testament in a cultural setting (10 EC)
Theism and ethics (10 EC)
Social cohesion/Religion and violence (10 EC)
Spirituality and mysticism (10 EC)
Transformation in tradition/Secularism (10 EC)
Elective course (20 EC)
Master’s thesis (20 EC)

In the second half of the second year you will be able to choose your own specialization, within which you will write your thesis.

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Arts degree.

Career prospects
Many graduates go on to a PhD. Within the Nijmegen Graduate School of Theology there are a few PhD places available for students from developing countries. Your own university will be able to give you more information about this. Apart from research, our graduate can be found all over the world engaged in pastoral work and education and in tasks associated with their own diocese and congregations.
