General information
The Master’s degree programme in Education, Educational Effectiveness and Instructional Design, is an English language version of a highly regarded Dutch Master’s degree programme, adapted to international students. It was established in response to the increasing interest in the educational expertise available at the University of Groningen, evident by the high demand for international educational consultancies and research projects led by our academics and staff.
By combining the strong American empirical tradition with the more European qualitative and normative discussion about education in a social and historical context, the Master’s programme in Education teaches students to analyse education from a system’s point of view. This results in attention for the context, input, process and outcomes of education. Central in this view is attention for ways to improve education and issues related to the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of education.
The programme is interdisciplinary with the core curriculum choices offered within the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Depending upon student interest and thesis topics, co-operation with other faculties regarding topics such as history of European education, information technology, research analysis & statistical techniques or the economics of education is possible.
Career prospects
Our Master’s degree programme in Education is developed for those who intend to make their career in educational policy, research and practice at a senior level. Career prospects for our graduates are as diverse as the students we attract; the programme is flexible and can be applied to all sectors of public and private education and training as well as to students’ own fields of endeavour. The programme is especially interesting for those who are already working as educational professionals and who would like to expand their knowledge base and research skills. Note that this programme is not a training programme for teachers.
This Master’s programme is ideal for enriching and extending professional capacity in education, for example in the areas of research, learning and instructional design, policy and curriculum development, history of education, educational management and accountability.
