European Studies on Society, Science and Technology-Uni
English-language programme teaches students to deal with the impact of new technologies - such as the internet, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and alternative energy.
The emergence and dissemination of new technologies - such as the internet, genetic engineering, nanotechnology and alternative energy production - both opens up opportunities for and constrains modern societies and economies. Citizens, governments, research institutes and corporations face challenges in trying to capitalise on the seemingly infinite opportunities that such developments offer. Thus, there is increasing demand for experts who can deal with the complexities of modern society in a reflective and politically conscious manner. ESST prepares you for a wide spectrum of professional activities in research and policy institutions, NGOs and private companies, or to follow a subsequent PhD programme. This is a one-year programme taught in English.
objectives
The programme will provide you with an opportunity to study and to carry out independent research at another university in the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science, and Technology. It also prepares you to pursue a university career (via a relevant PhD programme), or for work in public or private research institutes or agencies, in government, in industry or consultancy.
instruction modes
ESST is a programme with a maximum number of approximately 30 students admitted annually. The European Studies on Society, Science and Technology programme offers an integrated curriculum which is based on a combination of different educational methodologies, including tutorial groups, seminars, lectures and site visits. The tutorial group is the working centre of the programme. The groups are small, and are facilitated by a tutor, but students take it in turn to chair and focus discussion.
