Biology-Uni

Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen

A voyage of discovery
How do humans, animals and plants adapt to their environment? This question is central in the Nijmegen’s Master’s programme in Biology. The biologists at the University are just as aware of the larger whole – the ecosystems, river courses and populations – as they are of smaller building blocks such as cells, genes and pollen. In this way they are able to reveal nature’s fundamental mechanisms. Our top scientists will take you with them on their voyage of discovery.

Experts
Training is closely linked to on-going research within the Institute for Water and Wetlands Research, the Institute of Neuroscience and the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences. Nijmegen’s biologists are experts in plant and animal ecology, microbiology, the development of plants and neurobiology. This is reflected both in the many publications that appear in top journals and the number of national and international subsidies allocated to them. As a Master’s student you will be part of this dynamic research environment and you will be able to make use of state-of-the-art facilities.

Personal tutor
This programme offers you many opportunities to follow your own interests under the guidance of a personal tutor. At the beginning of your training you will choose which of the two main subject areas you wish to follow: Water & Wetlands or Neurobiology. Each time you start a research internship you will select a research group and be allocated a supervisor. Together you will decide which research to carry out and the specializations and subject choices that most effectively support it. In practice you will be occupied for four days a week with your own research and one day will be devoted to lectures. Your second research internship may either be carried out at another university in the Netherlands, abroad or in a company. Here our wide international research network can be of great benefit.

The programme
The programme, which takes two years, is built up as follows:

Two research internships (each 45 EC) including practical work (36 EC), a theoretical component, a test (3 EC) and a thesis (6EC)
Bio-scientific Master courses (12 EC)
Philosophy course (3EC)
Elective courses (15 EC)

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
This programme provides you with the qualifications you need to start working on your PhD and most graduates do just that. Within our research institute there are vacancies every year and graduates are also employed as researchers and managers in international companies and at research institutions.

Admission requirements

The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in Biology with relevant subjects. If you don’t have all the right subjects, you will need to catch up. You may take a maximum of six months for this and your success will be evaluated by the examination commission
Fluency in written and spoken English: a TOEFL score of at least 550 or an IELTS of 6.5 for non native English language speakers

Programme summary
Biological issues are at the forefront of the technological advance of modern society. They are central to global concerns about how we affect and are affected by our environment. Understanding the complexity of biological systems, at scales ranging from single molecules to whole ecosystems, provides a unique intellectual challenge. With over 30 biological research groups, Wageningen University can offer tailor-made MSc biology programmes that allow students to specialise in a fi eld that appeals to your personal interest. To prepare for a successful international career, we strongly encourage our students to complete part of their programme requirements abroad. Admission requires basic training in all fundamental biological disciplines.

This master programme consists of four specialisations students can choose from:

Cell Biology
Animal Biology
Plant Biology
Ecology

Your future career
Many graduates from the Biology programme enter careers in fundamental and applied research or go on to postgraduate studies. Some find a position as communication offi cer, manager or decision-maker. Most of our graduates find a job within six months of graduation. Compared to other Dutch universities, twice as many biology graduates from Wageningen University find a position abroad.
