Programme summary
Bioinformatics is a new scientific discipline with roots in the computer sciences, statistics and molecular biology. Bioinformatics was developed to cope with the output of genome sequencing projects, which have resulted in an ever-increasing amount of sequence data. Bioinformaticians bridge the gap between biological research questions and this data, and use statistical methods and specific software tools to predict gene functions and to demonstrate relationships between genes, proteins and metabolites. Notably, almost all scientists in Life Sciences now use
these predictions to answer their specific research questions. In the foreseeable future, the incorporation of genetic, molecular, biochemical and cell biological data will require radically different methods of storing and retrieving this information. In addition, completely in silico predictions of cell behaviour are expected to be extended from single cell to multicellular organisms.

Graduates of this programme have

A thorough understanding of molecular biology, bioinformatics and systems biology;
Knowledge and skills in the computer sciences, statistics and molecular biology as applied to the analysis of biological data to predict gene functions and demonstrate the relationship between genes and proteins;
The skills necessary to annotate genomes;
Insight into the structure and functioning of genomes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms;
Skills and knowledge of methodologies to develop new bioinformatics tools.

Your future career
Bioinformatics is a new fast growing field of research poorly served by traditional curricula in Life Sciences. As demand has outpaced the supply of bioinformaticians, the first job after graduation is often a PhD project at a research institute or university. It is anticipated that five years after graduation, about one third will stay employed as a scientist at a university or research centre, while the others choose for a career at researchoriented pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.
