Mathematics-Uni

Type of programme: Regular Master's programme (MSc.)
Start date : September
Language of instruction: English
Length: 2 years, full-time, 120 EC

Introduction
Logical thinking, sharp analysis and intensely pure reasoning. These are the characteristics of the true mathematician. Nijmegen mathematicians are master thinkers of world renown. Their power to think and calculate has enabled them to provide solutions to innumerable questions in science and in everyday life. Mathematics can ensure more efficient logistics, better computer information systems and a deeper understanding of natural phenomena. Our Master’s programme offers you a thorough, theoretical education while maintaining a clear perspective on concrete applications.

Programme
Our Master’s study is closely related to the research being carried out in the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP). Nijmegen mathematicians are very open-minded and have established many types of different relationships with other disciplines and research institutes. This has resulted in stimulating research and interesting study choices. You can chose from the following specialisations:

Algebra and Logic
Mathematical Physics
Stochastics

The programme is built up as follows:

Specialisation courses (30 EC)
Elective courses as part of Dutch MasterMath (30 EC)
Other elective courses (17 EC)
Philosophy (3 EC)
Master’s thesis (40 EC)

Admission requirements for international students
1. A completed Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related area
Entering the Master's in Mathematics requires a bachelor degree in Mathematics that is the equivalent of a Dutch university diploma. The Exam Committee can demand that one adds specific courses to the master program, depending on the Master specialisation. For example, with a bachelor degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics, one will be admitted to the Master's in Mathematics with the specialisation Physics.
2. A proficiency in English
The language requirements for Master's programme in Mathematics differ from the general language requirements!

In order to take part in the programme, you need to have a sufficient level of English. This requirement has been satisfied when the student provides us with one of these documents:

TOEFL score of >550 (paper based) or >213 (computer based) or >80 (internet based)
IELTS score of >6.5
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Proficiency in English (CPE), with a mark of at least C

Application procedure
The enrolment procedure for Research Master's programmes differ from the procedure for our Regular Master's programmes. You can find both procedures below.

1. Research Master's programmes
Step 1: Contact programme coordinator
The enrolment procedure takes one step extra for Research Master's than it does for our Regular Master's programme, since an interview with the programme coordinator and/or your intended supervisor precedes the online application.
On the programme pages of the Research Master's you can find the details of the coordinator of the programme of your choice. Please contact him or her first if you seek admission to one of the Research programmes.
Step 2: Online application
The official application procedure starts as soon as you have been allocated a supervisor. After the programme coordinator has officially approved your application and has admitted you to the programme, you can proceed with the general application procedure.

2. Regular Master's programme
Students who want to apply for a Regular Master's programme can continue with the general application procedure straight away.

Deadlines
The Master’s programme
Our university has set a deadline for enrolment in Master’s programmes given in English. Non-EEA residents who apply before 1 March will be guaranteed accommodation, support with visa and residence permit. If you apply after this date, we will still consider your application but we cannot give any guarantees. For Master’s students from one of the EEA countries, this deadline is 1 May of each year. You will receive an admissions decision approximately three months after have sent in your request for admission.
