Mathematics-Uni

Our Master’s study is closely related to the research being carried out in the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP). Nijmegen mathematicians are very open-minded and have established many types of different relationships with other disciplines and research institutes. This has resulted in stimulating research and – for Master’s students – interesting study choices. You can chose from the following specializations:

- Mathematical Physics: mathematics applied to physics
- Stochastics, in particular mathematics applied to neuroscience; a cooperation between the IMAPP and the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour
- Mathematical Foundation of Computer Science: mathematics applied to information science; involving cooperation between IMAPP and the Institute for Computing and Information Science (ICIS).

Personal tutor
Under the guidance of a personal tutor, this Master’s programme offers you considerable freedom to follow your own interests. At the beginning of your study you choose your specialization. Within your specialization you can select a research group and you will be allocated to a personal tutor. Together you will decide the research area you wish to focus on and the most appropriate specializations and subject choices. In short, you will develop a tailor-made programme based on your own wishes.

Dutch Mastermath
The Departments of Mathematics in all Dutch universities have coordinated their efforts to enhance their Master’s programmes in Mathematics. Each year they work together to develop a collective programme of special courses selected from different training programmes. This enables students to profit from the best that each Dutch study in mathematics has to offer.

The programme
This Master’s programme, which takes two years, is built up as follows:

Specialization courses (30 EC)
Elective courses as part of Dutch MasterMath (30 EC)
Other elective courses (17 EC)
Philosophy (3 EC)
Master’s thesis (40 EC)

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
Our graduates are analysts and problem solvers who make contributions in many fields. Most find a job immediately after graduating either in trade and industry, the financial sector, ICT or management.

Admission requirements

The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (as evaluated by the examinations commission)
An interview during which any deficiencies related to the chosen field are identified. These can be made up during the Master’s programme to a maximum of 30 EC
Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of minimum 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native speakers of English

Application

This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and you apply before 1 March, we can guarantee accommodation as well as help with getting a visa and a residence permit. If you are from the EEA and you apply before 1 May, we can guarantee accommodation during your stay at the University.
