Chemistry-Uni

Molecules and materials
As a chemist you juggle with matter. You dissect, analyze and build. Our Chemistry Master’s programme, which provides you with an exceptional tool box for your future, is closely associated with the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). At this research institute physicists and chemists work together to explore the properties of molecules and materials. This cooperation between the most chemical of chemists and the most physical of physicists in one research institute is unique in the world. It is the secret of IMM’s success and its many scientific breakthroughs.

Unique equipment
Our Faculty of Science has unique facilities and equipment for investigating the properties of materials and molecules. The High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML) attracts scientists from all over the world to Nijmegen. In addition, we have the NanoLab, the NMR Lab and the Laser Lab. Our newest acquisition is a Free Electron Laser which we have been able to build thanks to funding of €23 million from the Dutch government. Also, this Nijmegen Centre for Advanced Spectrometry draws top international researchers to Nijmegen. As a Master’s student you will be able to use these facilities and in doing so you will work at the cutting edge of science.

Top scientists
The funding we have received for our research reflect the achievements we have made. Our scientists enjoy world fame. They participate in various EU research projects and are able to access money which can be used, for example, for PhD projects. They also do a considerable amount of contract research for international companies. Your personal tutor will be one of these top scientists and for your specialization you will join one of our research groups, for example, organic chemistry, solid state chemistry or bio-physical chemistry. This group will become your home and from there you will explore the world.

The programme
The two year programme is structured as follows:

Major research project including Master’s thesis, presentation and literature thesis (60EC)
Basic and advanced courses related to the major (27 EC)
Philosophy (3 EC)
Minor: this can be an internship within another research institute in Nijmegen or anywhere in the world, or an internship in the commercial sector (24 EC)
Elective courses (6 EC).

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
Most of our graduates take up a PhD position, either in Nijmegen or elsewhere in the world. Our research institutes have many vacancies for PhD projects every year. Our graduates also find work as researchers and managers in industry, in business and in research institutes.

Admission requirements

The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (as evaluated by the examination board)
Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of at least 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native speakers of English.

Application

This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and you apply before 1 March, we can guarantee accommodation as well as help with getting a visa and a residence permit. If you are from the EEA and you apply before 1 May, we can guarantee accommodation during your stay at the University.
If you apply after these dates, we will still consider your application, but unfortunately cannot provide the assistance described above. If you intend to apply for a scholarship, please make sure you send your request for admission well before the closing date of the scholarship programme.
