Programme summary
The world’s in water and sanitation crisis has staggering human and economic costs: some 1.1 billion people in the world have no access to safe water, 2.6 billion do not have adequate sanitation and some two million children die each year from preventable diseases.
Nearly half the people in developing countries suffer the immediate and damaging effects of this crisis. In September 2000 the largestever gathering of world leaders agreed on eight Millennium Development Goals. One goal is to reduce by half the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Low-cost sustainable technologies are needed to achieve these targets.
Europeans are becoming more concerned with how much water is available and the quality of the water resources they use. Water resources are overexploited in 60 percent of European urban and industrial areas, and governments are searching for solutions domestically and internationally. Global water issues require huge investments in research and there is no question that businesses involved in water technology will see tremendous growth.
Your future career
The study domain is becoming more and more relevant due to the urgent need for new technologies to meet the global water problems. The private sector, knowledge institutes and Dutch policy-makers have selected water technology as one of the ‘key areas’ in which the Netherlands excels and had achieved a competitive international position. The track prepares students for a professional position in the broad area of Water Technology. Graduates will be employed as water specialists in various business positions, as entrepreneurs or as PhD students in the Wetsus research programme.
