Medical Biology-Uni

Linking theory to therapy
The human body is ingeniously constructed. But sometimes the system goes wrong. Then the cells of the nervous system give out wrong messages, the immune system fails or there is rampant cell growth. In the Nijmegen Master’s programme Medical Biology you will explore the biological mechanisms of health and sickness. Our programme is unique because it is a combination of fundamental research and the translation of its findings into clinical applications. This is facilitated by our close cooperation with the University Medical Centre. As a medical biologist you will be able to use your theoretical insights to improve both the diagnosis and the treatment of illness.

Experts
The programme is closely linked to the research carried out in the Institute for Wetlands and Water Research, the Institute for Neuroscience and the University Medical Centre. Researchers from these internationally recognized institutes are experts in the understanding of the fundamental causes and treatment of infectious diseases such as malaria and AIDS, genetic defects, oncology and the sicknesses associated with the elderly such as Parkinson and Alzheimer. This is reflected in the number of publications in top journals and the amount of international and national subsidies received. As a Master’s student you will become part of this dynamic research environment and you will be able to make use of state-of-the-art facilities.

Personal tutor
This Master’s programme will give you a lot of freedom to follow your own interests under the guidance and supervision of a personal tutor. One internship will be in a biological research group and the other within the University Medical Centre or the Donders Institute for Brain Cognition and Behaviour. Within each group students will be allocated a personal supervisor to help them determine their research, their specialization and the most appropriate optional subjects. In practice you will spend four days on your own research and one day on lectures.

The programme
This programme, which takes two years, is structured as follows:

Two research internships (each 45 EC) including practical work (36 EC), a theoretical component and tests (3 EC) and a thesis (6 EC)
Bio-scientific Master courses (12 EC)
Philosophy course (3 EC)
Elective courses (15 EC)

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
This programme qualifies you for a PhD place. Most of our graduates go on to do a PhD and every year there are vacancies in our research institutes. Our graduates also find work in the commercial sector, the pharmaceutical industry as well as in research institutes and teaching hospitals.

Admission requirements

The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological subject. If there are gaps in your knowledge you will be able to follow an additional programme (30 EC) (to be evaluated by the examinations commission);
Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of at least 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native speakers of English.

Application

This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and you apply before 1 March, we can guarantee accommodation as well as help with getting a visa and a residence permit. If you are from the EEA and you apply before 1 May, we can guarantee accommodation during your stay at the University.
If you apply after these dates, we will still consider your application, but unfortunately cannot provide the assistance described above. If you intend to apply for a scholarship, please make sure you send your request for admission well before the closing date of the scholarship programme.
