Molecular Life Sciences-Uni
Molecular Life Sciences focuses on state of the art methodology and the skills that enable researchers to unravel the molecular mechanisms in health and disease, and offers 4 specialisations.
The Molecular Life Sciences programme has the following specialisations:
Clinical Molecular Sciences emphasises the acquisition of knowledge, insight and practical skills necessary for unravelling the molecular basis of human disease. Topics cover chronic and/or inflammatory diseases as for example the metabolic syndrome and diabetes, asthma, COPD, Alzheimer, schizophrenia, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular Biology and Medicine offers research training in cardiovascular biology and diseases. The programme focuses on the three following research areas:
• thrombosis and hemostasis
• cardiac function and failure
• vascular biology
Nutrition and Metabolism focuses on biomedical research and the relationship between diet and metabolism. You will receive a holistic understanding of the role of diet in the regulation of metabolic processes and the prevention of metabolic disorders.
Oncology and Developmental Biology aims at increasing students' insight into the factors and processes involved in normal and abnormal growth.
This is a two-year full-time programme taught in English.

 The secret of health
DNA and protein are the secret codes of the human body. Decipher the codes and you will get an insight into bodily processes. In Nijmegen we offer a multidisciplinary Master’s programme in Molecular Life Sciences. Working at the interface of chemistry, biology and medical science, you will not only explore the basic principles of molecules and cells, but also their role in health and disease. This combination of scientific topics translated into medical implications and solutions is unique in the Netherlands.
Top scientists
The programme is closely associated with two institutes that have an excellent international reputation: the Institute of Molecules and Materials and the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences. You will enter a dynamic research environment, work with top scientists, learn about the latest developments in your discipline and conduct research in state-of-the-art laboratories. Thanks to cooperation with the neighbouring University Medical Centre, there is continuous exchange between Lab and Clinic.
Great freedom
You will be given considerable freedom to follow your own interests. Two internships are central to the programme. You choose a specialization and you join a related research group, for example Anthropogenetics, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Neurobiology or Bioinformatics. You will have your personal tutor who will help you decide which subjects and research to follow. Your second internship will be with a different research group. You can also choose to follow an internship abroad or within a company. In making your choice, you will be able to benefit from the extensive international networks of our scientists.
The programme
The two-year programme (60 EC per year) is structured as follows: |
Two internships (each lasting eight months and each worth 45 EC) to be performed in different departments and each consisting of practical research and a written report (36 EC), a theoretical component (3 EC) and a literature thesis (6 EC)
| |
Courses in line with your chosen research topic and selected from an extensive list of Master’s level courses (30 EC) |
Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.
Career prospects
Most of our graduates go on to do a PhD in Nijmegen, at another Dutch university or abroad. Each year our research institutes have a number of PhD vacancies. Some of our graduates find a job as a researcher or manager in the pharmaceutical industry, in the private commercial sector or in research organizations.
Admission requirements |
The equivalent of a Dutch Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Life Sciences, (Medical) Biology, Chemistry or Natural Sciences. These degrees must have an adequate multidisciplinary basis (as evaluated by the Examination Committee)
| |
Fluency in both written and spoken English. A TOEFL score of at least 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non-native English speakers |
Application
This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.
If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and you apply before 1 March, we can guarantee accommodation as well as help with getting a visa and a residence permit. If you are from the EEA and you apply before 1 May, we can guarantee accommodation during your stay at the University.
If you apply after these dates, we will still consider your application, but unfortunately cannot provide the assistance described above. If you intend to apply for a scholarship, please make sure you send your request for admission well before the closing date of the scholarship programme.

Programme summary
The Molecular Life Sciences programme focuses on molecules and their properties. It seeks to discover relationships between the physical and chemical properties of molecules, particularly the role of complex molecules in living systems. It is an interdisciplinary programme that combines chemistry, physics and biology. The aim of the programme is to enable students to conduct independent research at the interface of chemistry, biology and physics, or in an applied fi eld such as medicine, the environment, food sciences or (bio)nanotechnology. The programme is tailor-made and thesis-oriented, with the thesis being the culmination of the study.
Your future career
By combining the power of chemistry, physics and biology, graduates are able to make a significant contribution to fundamental and/or applied research in fields such as bionanotechnology, biotechnology, environmental research, the plant, animal and health sciences, biomedical research, nutrition and the food sciences. Our graduates enter careers at universities, research institutes and industrial laboratories. Many enter PhD programmes, while others become science journalists, managers or consultants in government or industry.
