Behavioural Science-Uni

Multidisciplinary themes
Nothing is as fascinating as human behaviour. Why are there so many people called Dennis living in Denver, for example? And why does one person become addicted and not another? Behavioural scientists at Radboud University Nijmegen know the answers. They will teach you how you can set up experiments to study human behaviour. Our Master’s programme in Behavioural Science distinguishes itself by its multidisciplinary approach. Psychologists and educationalists work together on such themes as addiction, stereotypes, phobias, dyslexia and the unconscious. This integrated approach is much appreciated by our Master’s students. They are also very satisfied with the wide choice of subjects.

Unique facilities
The Master’s programme is closely related to the research being carried out in the internationally renowned Behavioural Science Institute. This institute has several unique facilities for carrying out experimental research. One example is our Virtual Reality Laboratory where we can observe people’s (often unconscious) behaviour. In order to study the way in which addicts behave we have a Bar Lab. Our mobile lab is also unique. This EEG bus makes it possible for us to measure processes in the brain at specific locations like school, for example. Finally, we are able to use the new EEG, fMRI and MEG facilities of the Donders Institute for Neuroimaging. Of course you too – as a Master’s student – will be able to use these facilities to increase your capacity to manage new experimental research techniques.

Research training
In this programme you will receive the training you need to conduct behavioural research. In the first year you will carry out research – in small groups – in one of our many ongoing research projects. In the past this has led to students publishing their results in international journals and – already during their study – making a valuable contribution to scientific progress.
In addition to the regular programme, throughout the year there are workshops and lectures organised by well known international guest speakers. In the second year you will write your own research proposal and - under the supervision of one of our top scientists – carry out your own research, before writing up the results in the form of a journal article.

The programme
The programme, which takes two years, consists of the following components:
First year:

Basic principles of behavioural science (6 EC)
Choice of two out of several general behavioural science courses (12 EC)
Choice of two out of several Specific Core Theme courses (12 EC)
Advanced data analysis (6 EC)
Research training (15 EC)
Workshops and colloquia (3 EC)
Free choice course (6 EC)

Second year:

Research proposal (6 EC)
Individual research project (30 EC)
Master’s thesis (24 EC)

You can choose pedagogy, psychology or a combination of both as your main subject area and you can follow lectures in both fields.

Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree.

Career prospects
You will receive a thorough training in research. Sixty percent of our students go on to do PhD projects in Nijmegen or elsewhere in the world. Our graduates also find work as researchers or policy advisors in government agencies and research institutes.

Admission requirements

The equivalent of the Dutch Bachelor’s degree in psychology, pedagogy, educational science, biology or artificial intelligence (evaluation by the examination commission)
A letter explaining your motivation
Two reference letters
A personal interview
Fluency in English, both written and spoken: TOEFL score of at least 550 or IELTS 6.5 for non native speakers of English

Application

This Master’s programme begins in September. Registration closes on 1 January for students outside the EEA and on 1 April for students from EEA countries.

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and you apply before 1 March, we can guarantee accommodation as well as help with getting a visa and a residence permit. If you are from the EEA and you apply before 1 May, we can guarantee accommodation during your stay at the University.
If you apply after these dates, we will still consider your application, but unfortunately cannot provide the assistance described above. If you intend to apply for a scholarship, please make sure you send your request for admission well before the closing date of the scholarship programme.
