Globalisation and Development Studies-Uni
The Master of Arts in Globalisation and Development Studies (GDS) prepares students for academic and professional careers in the field of globalisation and development.
Globalisation and Development Studies is a one-year, selective, international and interdisciplinary programme taught in English. Numerous links with national and international organisations, government agencies, and research projects give students the skills, experience and knowledge required in the field of G&D both in academia and the professional world. Students are required to have a bachelor degree in the humanities, social sciences or related, relevant field.
objectives
The programme focuses on how globalisation trends are affecting and interconnecting different areas of the globe while marginalizing others and how they produce diverse ‘local' responses. While acknowledging the role of state and market in processes of globalisation and development, its emphasis is on social forces and agency by focusing on processes of globalisation ‘from the ground up', as they are experienced in everyday lives: it emphasizes local actors.
instruction modes
Throughout the MA GDS, problem-based learning (PBL) is used as the leading didactic principle. PBL typically involves students working on problems in small groups of 15 people with the assistance of a faculty tutor. Problems serve as the context for new learning. Their analysis and solution lead to the acquisition of new knowledge and integrated problem-solving skills. Hence, PBL requires students to be active rather than passive.
