Programme summary
This programme deals with worldwide processes of development and change with an emphasis on rural areas and rural-urban interaction, agro-food chains, and the management of the natural environment. It focuses on transformation processes both in Europe and in developing countries in a dynamic international context. It approaches the study of social, economic, political, technological, and environmental change from various perspectives, both private and public, both local and global. Through this programme you will develop a critical understanding of recent development theories, learn to plan and conduct research and become skilled at translating research fi ndings into development policies, intervention strategies and institutional innovations. You will learn to include the diverging views of various stakeholders and to work in multi-disciplinary teams. Depending on your previous education, you can follow one of the following specialisations.

Your future career
Graduates can be employed in capacities such as researcher, teacher, consultant, adviser, or policy-maker in various internationally-oriented organisations. You could work, for example, as policy-maker in a government or semi-governmental institute, as development expert in an international governmental or non-governmental organisation (such as FAO, World Bank, European Union, World Vision, ActionAid International, Oxfam Novib), as expert in a consultancy fi rm, as communication adviser in an organisation such as World Wildlife Fund or Fair Trade, or as researcher and/or teacher in a university or research institute. Other opportunities are working in a commercial position at a bank or company, or as (scientifi c) journalist or a trainer.
