Programme summary
It has become clear in recent years that the world is facing significant climate changes, the effects of which are already becoming apparent. The debate no longer revolves around whether our climate will change but how it will change, how we can cope with the impact (adaptation), and how we can stop climate change in the long term (mitigation). These issues are important the world over and fuel a range of new challenges to natural and social sciences.
The Climate Studies programme will give you a broad overview of climate-change related issues and you will become an expert in a topic of your choice during your thesis research. Climate-change related research projects are offered by the following chair groups: Earth System Science, Environmental Systems Analysis, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, Environmental Policy, Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management, Meteorology and Air Quality, and Soil Quality. All groups participate in the Wageningen Institute for Environment and Climate Research. According to a recent international panel assessment, the quality and relevance of their research programmes range from very good to excellent.
Your future career
Graduates of this programme are well equipped to continue academic training as a PhD student or start a career as a scientifi c professional. Earth system scientists are employed at universities, environmental organisations, research institutes and governmental organisations. Experts in climate-change related issues are expected to fi nd jobs with governments, banks, insurance companies, power companies and the building industry.
